June 2009 From the Principal’s Corner: The 2008-2009 school year is quickly coming to a close. As it does, it is fun to sit back and reminisce on some of the fantastic accomplishments and activities of the year. Some of them are listed below: - Our students in grades 2 – 5 participated in 11 club opportunities throughout the year
- Each student was given an interest survey which helped determine which clusters would be offered to students this year. Then, 100% of our students participated in an interest based enrichment cluster
- Each classroom was read to by a community member during our Camp Read-a-lot week
- Each classroom had a community member visit their classroom to share their expertise on a curriculum related topic
- We hosted a Board of Education meeting at Bernabi where the Board had a conversation about Bernabi’s goals for the year
- Bernabi piloted two programs for students with disabilities for the district Integrated Co-Teacher and Resource Room
- NYS ELA for 3/4/5 students: Grade 3 – 89%, Grade 4 – 88%, Grade 5 – 93% scored a Level 3 or 4
- NYS Math for 3/4/5 students: Grade 3 – 100%, Grade 4 – 95%, Grade 5 – 98% scored a Level 3 or 4
- Each grade level went on at least two field trips
- Bernabi put our clusters on display at our evening Cluster Showcase
- We celebrated Constitution Day, Earth Day, Buddy Reading Day, Red Ribbon Week, Picnic Lunch Day, PJ Day, Hat Days, Blue and Gold Days, Jersey Day and Holiday Colors Days just to name a few
- The students wrote letters of appreciation to staff members
- Most of our fourth and fifth graders participated in band, chorus and/or intramurals
- Our students participated in many assembly opportunities
- All students attended the Cosgrove play “The King and I”
- We contributed to a national, international and local charity
- Our parents association hosted many events including, roller skating parties, Bingo nights, Camp Read-a-lot, staff luncheon, breakfast with Santa and holiday shop, two fund raisers and they are planning a family picnic
- NYS Social Studies exam for grade 5 – 98% scores a Level 3 or 4
- NYS Science exam for grade 4 – 99% scores a Level 3 or 4
As you can see, we have been busy this year and this is only a few of our accomplishments. This summer Bernabi will undergo extensive remodeling thanks to the last Capital Improvement Project. If you need to visit the school for any reason please call first to make sure the building is accessible. Enjoy your summer and please continue to read.
