Getting Fit at Canal View
With Spring now upon us and the weather turning warmer, many of us start getting the itch to get outside and get a little more exercise in. Each year we provide students with multiple opportunities to learn about and engage in fitness activities throughout the year and we are headed in that direction. Our district curriculum in Physical Education and Health call for a number of activities, lessons and experiences where our students have these opportunities. We supplement this with guest speakers, assemblies, field trips and special events as well. For example, our Physical Education teachers coordinate extracurricular programs like intramurals, family volleyball, our 3-on-3 basketball tournament, the January Jog, field days and our Turkey Trot. We compliment these with our roller skating parties, fitness walks, recess, our JAMmin Minute exercise program and faculty fitness programs coordinated by our school nurse. In addition, each year we have a health fair to promote life-long skills for children and attempt to make connections to "real life" benefits. Our health fair theme for this year will be connected to fitness experiences that involve, or are connected to the outdoors and nature. On the morning of our Health Fair our intermediate students will hear from experts on activities that they can participate in to promote lifelong health and fitness while enjoying the great outdoors. This will take place at the Spencerport Nature Center behind the high school and students will participate in a number of events based upon their interests. Examples include orienteering, fishing, hiking, birding, and nature photography. In the afternoon our primary students will participate in a parade and activities that are focused on nature. Along with this is the work that our health teacher leader does to assist our faculty and staff with any needs and supports they may have in the classroom with our health curriculum. Multiple studies suggest that there are strong connections between a healthy lifestyle and increased capacity for learning. With our district moving forward in the Health & Wellness Initiative, Canal View will continue to assess our programs and initiatives for our students. Our work with positive behavior and character education is an important part of the overall wellness of our students as well. We will continue to develop programs and initiatives that support this at Canal View and appreciate your continued support at home.
