NEW Rating Day set
Due to the need for scoring the state assessments, a Rating Day has been rescheduled to Monday, April 30.
There will be no school for students in grades K-8 on that day. This date has been changed from Friday, April 27 to now Monday, April 30. To reiterate:
- April 27: school in session
- April 30: No school for K-8
Please make this change on your calendars, and thank you for your patience as Spencerport adheres to the state's revised dates.

From the Principal
One topic which has been brought up frequently recently concerns how to keep our students safe in all settings. Community Education is continuing to partner with Epic Trainings to bring our students safety courses. They will be offering Social Networking Safety again this January. This information will be available via Virtual Backpack and flyers will be sent home in the backpack as the date gets closer. Networking tools such as Facebook, YouTube, IM, Text Messaging or Online Gaming often put our children at risk. Through open discussions, group exercises, written materials and real life video documentaries, your child will be taught about the importance of being safe while networking. Some Topics Discussed Include:
• Keeping Your Identity Safe
• Internet Bullying - Cyber, Texting and Gaming Bullying
• Offline Repercussions
This class is for ages 10-15. Classes will be held after school on Jan. 24 @ Terry Taylor. The cost is $15.
Together we make great things happen! The Taylor community assisted with holiday celebrations for nearly ten families in need last month. The assistance came in the form of personal donations of time, finances, gifts, and our annual Cartons for Christmas campaign. Our PTO kicked in with assistance with one of our families as well once we provided them with sizes, needs, and personal interests for two of our students. Kudos also to several individual staff members who annually select families in need to ensure that some of our less fortunate students celebrate the holidays in a special way. Thank you as well to our district’s volunteer coordinator, Eileen Magin, and the Spencerport Rotary Club for providing new winter coats, hats and gloves for two Taylor families.
Speaking of kudos, three Taylor students will be recognized at the January school board meeting from Taylor. They are Damari McCutchen, Robbie Streicher and Tevy Ladiges. Their art work was shown at the NY State Art Teacher’s conference this November in Tarrytown. Two of our art teachers went to the conference and brought work down to be displayed.
This year’s yearbooks are on sale now through Friday, January 13th. The cost is $14.00. If paying by check, please make payable to Herff Jones Photography.
Thanks to our PBIS team for putting together some post-bully blocker lesson announcements, which we have been hearing on Thursday mornings. The lesson for this coming week (January 11) includes the video for Skill 3- Friendship Builders. The students should have brought home the worksheets that accompanied skill two just before break. By the way, did you check out the friendship chains that are hanging around the building after last week’s lesson? I love the way Mrs. Mellon’s class has their chain draped around the door frame with a suggestion that those who enter the room are expected to put a drop in someone’s bucket today! Here’s a question to ask students as they follow up with the idea of building friendships: What qualities do you look for in a friend? Do you think you have those qualities yourself? What could you do to improve your own skills and habits as a friend?
As you know, TAS time occurs four days a week from 2:50 until 3:20. This time allows the students to work in smaller groups on targeted skills. Most of our TAS groups have been redesigned and have started up anew since we returned from break. I am working with a group of second graders on sequencing, main idea, and making predictions. I can’t wait to get to know a new crop of TAS time kids!
Did you know….Over the course of a lifetime, a high school dropout earns $1 million less than a college graduate. One of our goals at Taylor this year is to increase the students’ awareness of the “paths” we take to success, including beginning to think about college and careers. Check out our “Pathways to Success” bulletin board that is located in the checkered hallway near the gym. This month’s display is about sports and hobbies that were enjoyed by our staff when they were younger. Thanks again to parents Jane Cannan and Molly Lane, who help coordinate these monthly displays for our students. The kids enjoy the weekly trivia questions that go along with the bulletin board almost as much as they enjoy learning more about what the school staff members were involved in when they were younger.
If your family is just packing up from the holidays, please consider sending the covers of your holiday cards to school to be used for projects next year. 2011 picture calendars are always welcome, too. Just send them to school and we will distribute them to the art classrooms. Speaking of reminders, please call the school and let us know if you have a child who will be attending kindergarten in the fall. The letters with information about kindergarten registration will be sent in early February, and we don’t want to miss anyone! Remind your friends and neighbors, too!
If you have a child in grades three, four, or five, you might be receiving one or two letters from school. A letter went out to selected students in these grades to invite them to participate in our homework club on Thursdays after school, beginning next week. The club is designed to support students who need assistance completing homework regularly. We are also starting up our before-school ELA/math clinic, which will begin next week as well. The clinic offers an additional opportunity for students to build skills before taking the state assessments in April. Please call me if you believe your child would benefit from either opportunity yet you did not receive a letter.
As a matter of fact, call me whenever you believe I can help with an issue with your child. Working with the students is the best part of my day, as they always leave me full of hope and inspiration.
