Why serve on the Board? I served in the U.S. military for 23+ years and even after I retired, felt the drive to continue serving in some way. We intentionally moved to Spencerport from down south for the schools and in doing so, it opened the door for an outlet for serving the community. I first served on the PTO at Taylor and was president for several years. When there was an opening on the Board, I was encouraged by the Taylor principal and others to run and I was thrilled to become a member of the Board in 2010.

What are the top issues facing our schools? The answer to this has certainly changed over the past two years. First and foremost is the social and emotional well-being of our students and staff. Both are under a great deal of pressure as we emerge from the pandemic and we need to find creative ways to provide supports and counseling services to ease that burden.

Additionally, staffing shortages continue to plague public education and we must continue to be extremely proactive in attracting and retaining top talent.
Finally, we need to work at restoring the climate of our district and that we return some civility to the discourse on public education as role models for our kids. Our staff and administrators need to feel appreciated for the very difficult work they do as they work to respond to the losses felt as a result of the pandemic. And our students and families need to feel that our board is always operating under the direction of doing what is best for the kids. As a major pillar in Spencerport and the surrounding area, our district, in partnership with our community, needs to focus on rising up all kids and families to allow them to reach their full potential.

What would you like people to know about you? Hopefully anyone that knows me understands how passionate I am about our schools and the larger community. I try to always find the best way forward for our students and staff, looking for any chance to highlight the positive. But I can be equally passionate when it comes to facing negative events and helping work through them. We have a fantastic team in place leading our schools and it is a privilege to be associated with them. And on a lighter note, even though I really struggle with the winters up here, I do love what this community has meant to our family.
