Dear Spencerport Staff and Families,
I cannot tell you how upset and angry I am to be sending you this note. We wanted you to be aware of this information quickly and decided that it was important to communicate directly with all of you at the same time.
We have been informed that Ian Milam, a Cosgrove Middle School teacher, has been arrested and is being charged with crimes involving the production, receipt, possession of child pornography, and transfer of obscene material to a minor. The press release from the Department of Justice may be found below.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations and Greece Police Department informed us this morning that they had arrested and charged Milam, who is currently in custody. We are working with investigators to determine whether our students may be involved, and we encourage families with students who may have had him as a teacher or advisor to ask about their online activity.
Please be aware that this is an open investigation. The FBI has identified two Snapchat accounts that Milam used: matteckler and mikeywikey37. If you believe your child has been contacted by or interacted with these accounts, please call the FBI tip line at 585-279-0085.
Milam joined the Spencerport Central School District in 2018 and has served as an elementary and middle school teacher. He has been placed on administrative leave and had his access revoked to all district electronic resources and buildings. Further, he has been directed not to have any contact with SCSD students, staff, or families.
We are fully cooperating with law enforcement. In addition, we have been in contact with the Bivona Child Advocacy Center to provide guidance, and while our district counselors and social workers are not on staff over the summer, please reach out to us at 349-5140 if your student needs support in processing this information.
The district was never given any reason to suspect illegal or inappropriate behavior by Milam in any way. A background check and employment screening are required prior to hiring. His screening included a search of the New York State Sex Offender Registry. That screening came through with the approval from the State Education Department.
We have initiated our own internal review, and hope you understand that any official release of information will come from law enforcement agencies. Our priority will be to our students and maintaining the integrity of the FBI investigation.
This is difficult news to process, and we ask for your patience as we await updates from U.S. Attorney’s Office.
