Community update: budget vote and next steps

Graphic promoting a budget vote on June 16th.Following the recent budget vote—our first defeat in more than 25 years—the district is reflecting on the results and contributing factors, including voter apathy, as well as concerns about cost-of-living increases and tax impact.

On May 26, after considering the outcome and the potential impact of a contingent budget on students, the Board of Education unanimously approved holding a second vote. The revised proposal is intended to respond to community feedback and reflects shared decision-making, with schools and departments identifying additional areas for reduction.

The second vote will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., in our District Office building. A public hearing on the proposition will take place on Tuesday, June 9, 5:30 p.m. at Canal View Elementary School, prior to the board meeting at 6 p.m.

Details on the updated proposal are available at this link:

Student athlete shines at state leadership conference

On April 15, Spencerport 10th-grade student Bridget Courtney traveled to Albany to represent Section V at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Student Leadership Conference. The conference is an annual one-day event for current sophomores and juniors. Students must apply and be chosen from a pool of athletes to represent their division. Bridget is the first Spencerport student to represent Section V at the conference.

Bridget is a three-season athlete, participating in varsity cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track. She also represents Spencerport in the Section V Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) which meets to discuss the athletic communities across Section V.

“In SAAC, we do a lot of training with modified athletes,” said Bridget. “We have programs about sportsmanship, how to be a good teammate, and building community.”

Given her involvement in Section V leadership, Bridget applied to the Student Leadership Conference in the fall. “I thought this conference would be a good opportunity because I’ve never participated in leadership at the state level. I really wanted to learn what others are experiencing.”

The goal of the Student Leadership Conference is to help athletes sharpen their leadership skills to positively influence their teams and athletic communities. “For me, the best part of the conference were the speakers. They had past professional athletes and educators who had really interesting perspectives. Jeremy Thode, the keynote speaker, spoke about overcoming personal challenges which I thought was very interesting.”

Bridget plans to bring what she learned at the Student Leadership Conference back to her teams and the Spencerport athletic community, applying new leadership strategies and perspectives throughout her seasons.
