Concussion Management: Supporting Student Recovery and Success

At Spencerport Central School District, the health, safety, and well-being of our students are our highest priorities. A concussion can impact a student's ability to learn, participate in daily activities, and safely return to physical activity. For this reason, we follow a comprehensive Concussion Management Program designed to support students through both the Return-to-Learn and Return-to-Play processes.

Recovery from a concussion is not just about returning to athletics. Students must first successfully return to their academic responsibilities, with appropriate supports and accommodations as needed, before progressing to physical activity. Our approach emphasizes gradual reintegration, symptom monitoring, collaboration with healthcare providers, and ongoing communication among families, school staff, nurses, teachers, counselors, and athletic personnel.

The Concussion Management Team has developed the resources below to help families better understand the recovery process and navigate the Return-to-Learn pathway. These materials provide guidance on academic accommodations, symptom management, communication with healthcare providers, and the steps required before a student can safely resume participation in physical education, extracurricular activities, and athletics. We encourage families to review these resources carefully and contact their school nurse or athletic trainer with any questions regarding their child's recovery.
